The Choice is Made, Now What?

SENIORS – If you have made your choice about which school you wish to attend, there are things you need to do:

1. Tell the college of your choice that you will attend! Follow any instructions through your portal - send in your enrollment deposit and research housing options.

2. Politely (through an email or through your portal, if that is an option) tell colleges you are not choosing that you will not attend. That helps them manage their waiting list – and it is the right thing to do.

3. Research orientation sessions. I am a huge fan of orientation and I strongly encourage students to attend unless they are unable. Many dates for these programs are usually offered – some right before school starts, others throughout the summer. These sessions cover a myriad of topics and often offer students an opportunity to register for classes and/or take placement tests. You connect with other students (many will find a roommate during orientation) and become more comfortable and familiar with the campus before you move there and begin classes.

4. There are usually concurrent but separate orientation sessions for parents – and I recommend you attend if possible. These provide parents information about everything from accounts payable to student health/insurance; academic and behavioral expectations, to support services for students – all valuable information. You will not be in your student’s “hair” as your session and your accommodations, meals, etc., will not overlap – and that’s a good thing.

5. Don’t forget that you are still a high school student! Your college expects you to finish strong – and they will rescind your acceptance if your grades drop. Please “stay the course” and keep up the great work that got you into college!
